Every month we bring suggestions for ESL teaching using movies and series. They are a great strategy to engage students and to motivate them with the purpose of improving skills.
Please, read this post until the end to check our ideas and appropriate materials to use during or after watching those shows.
The shows for this month are:
Cruella (2021) – A fantasy movie whose purpose is to tell the villain’s story.
What to do? – the teacher can separate students into groups to check the most relevant events of her life, they can elaborate a timeline and also write her biography.
Another idea is to use its songs (they are from the 80’s) in listening activities. The website lyricstraining.com is a great strategy.
Lost Cities with Albert Lin (2019) – This documentary series are so curious and intriguing. Everybody loves mysteries.
What to do? – Teachers can use this documentary to teach History facts about their own country. In groups students can elaborate charts and explore the theme with researches.
Monsters at Work (2021) – This animated series is fun and attracted to all kind of audiences.

The Secret of the Magic Gourd (2007) – This animated movie is about a 11-year-old lazy boy who learns the meaning of work after a magic gourd grants him anything he wants.
What to do? – Besides our 40 ENGLISH GAMES, which is suitable for all these suggestions, teachers can elaborate a quiz with questions about the movie. There are many websites to prepare an online quiz.
On this post the idea is not to give you a plot or a critical analysis of these shows, but to give you ideas to motivate your students to improve skills beyond classes.
