ENGLISH WITH MOVIES: DISNEY PLUS SUGGESTIONS FOR JULY 2021

Every month we bring suggestions for ESL teaching using movies and series. They are a great strategy to engage students and to motivate them with the purpose of improving skills.

Please, read this post until the end to check our ideas and appropriate materials to use during or after watching those shows.

The shows for this month are:

Cruella (2021) – A fantasy movie whose purpose is to tell the villain’s story.

What to do? – the teacher can separate students into groups to check the most relevant events of her life, they can elaborate a timeline and also write her biography.

Another idea is to use its songs (they are from the 80’s) in listening activities. The website lyricstraining.com is a great strategy.

Lost Cities with Albert Lin (2019) – This documentary series are so curious and intriguing. Everybody loves mysteries.

What to do? – Teachers can use this documentary to teach History facts about their own country. In groups students can elaborate charts and explore the theme with researches.

Monsters at Work (2021) – This animated series is fun and attracted to all kind of audiences.

The Secret of the Magic Gourd (2007) – This animated movie is about a 11-year-old lazy boy who learns the meaning of work after a magic gourd grants him anything he wants.

What to do? – Besides our 40 ENGLISH GAMES, which is suitable for all these suggestions, teachers can elaborate a quiz with questions about the movie. There are many websites to prepare an online quiz.

On this post the idea is not to give you a plot or a critical analysis of these shows, but to give you ideas to motivate your students to improve skills beyond classes.

INGLÊS COM FILMES: DISNEY PLUS

Dessa vez o post será em português especialmente para professores brasileiros de inglês.

Ensinar um segundo idioma com filmes é muito divertido e engajador. Mesmo que o estudante se sinta aquém do nível avançado dos diálogos presentes em um filme ou série, a trama, o contexto, as imagens, o movimento das personagens e o tema em si colaboram para o entendimento.

Então vamos relacionar aqui alguns dos títulos deste mês de junho de 2021 disponíveis na Disney Plus:

Loki (2021) – Mesmo para quem não está habituado com o universo dos Avengers gostará dessa série pelo carisma da personagem principal e do tom divertido.

O que trabalhar: listening como completar trechos de diálogos, post-it nas testas dos alunos com pistas em inglês para um guessing das personagens, uma timeline dos eventos da vida de Loki são algumas das sugestões possíveis.

Avatar (2009) – Um filme de aventura e ficção científica que certamente tem sido atemporal.

O que trabalhar: muitos elementos são interessantes, mas um jogo excelente é o CINEMA CARD GAME. Esse produto exclusivo de Be a Busy Bee aprimora a escuta e fala em língua inglesa pois leva os alunos a jogarem em pequenos grupos e falarem sobre o conteúdo das cartas.

Por dentro da Pixar (2021) – Essa série documentário pode ser outra estratégia de conduzir os alunos, mesmo que em níveis diferentes de aprendizado a entender sobre o que se trata.

O que trabalhar: nesse momento, é interessante trabalhar vocabulário dentro do contexto dos episódios, como produção de elementos, cenário, palavras relacionadas a cinema etc.

Luca (2021) – o filme de animação é especial para trazer o fundo do mar como elemento principal.

O que trabalhar: além de atividades de listening, é possível criar jogos simples e práticos com o tema desse filme. Para isso, o e-book 40 JOGOS EM INGLÊS traz ideias muito práticas que podem ser adaptadas para qualquer idade ou nível de conhecimento de inglês.

O que trabalhar: uma timeline dos eventos entre todos os episódios, sistema solar, biografia das personagens principais como Anakin e Luke Skywalker. Além disso, frases épicas como May the Force be with you atentando para o uso de modal verbs também é uma ideia.
