ESL TEACHING: CLIL

Teaching English as a second language is not about showing vocabulary without context. Unfortunately, there are many people who know isolated words in English but they aren’t able to use that vocabulary in a real situation such as a conversation in a restaurant or at work.

Some teachers don’t know what CLIL is: Content and Language Integrated Learning. Basically is teaching other subjects such as Geography, Math, Art or other content in English, in a natural way that provides students knowledge and the conditions to see the world in another perspective, developing and improving language in the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing).

There are several texts and books with this theme, however it is difficult to find easy examples to understand better how to use this approach.

How to use this approach? How to help students to understand better different subjects thinking just in English? In CLIL teachers can work with annual, semiannual or short-term projects. Here there are some ideas:

Ancient civilizations

The world of numbers

Media and Consumption

Health and well-being

These themes above embrace Geography, History, Science, Math and other subjects which can be taught in English in a level that is possible to be understandable.

This CLIL approach requires a major lesson plan preparation. For this reason teachers need materials to optimize time.

4O ENGLISH GAMES was developed for ESL teachers all over the world. In the eBook there is information about age, number of players, materials needed, time, and space organization. The games and dynamics can be adapted for any kind of subjects, being a special tool for CLIL lessons.

As we mentioned, in CLIL approach teachers can use games and dynamics to reinforce or review a topic studied. In the projects above, our eBook can be a complement after an explanation lesson with ludic activities that will provide fun and significant moments to put their apprenticeship in practice.
