Disney Plus offers a major number of movies, series and other shows for all kind of audiences. In ESL teaching, these shows can be used in class to motivate and energize students to improve their skills.
This month we selected five titles which are:
The Greatest Showman (2017) – a drama musical movie which can be used as listening tasks. Students can complete the lyrics of some songs given after watching the movie.
The Mighty Ducks – Game Changers (2021) – this comedy series attracts sport fans and it is possible to use some episodes to teach sport vocabulary and comparative form of adjectives as well.
Big City Greens (2019) – animated comedy series for kids. A great number of possibilities to teach English as a second language. Furniture, city, transport, and places in town vocabulary are some of the contents inserted in this show.
Saving Notre Dame (2020) – a domentary about the French Cathedral renovation after a fire occurred some years ago. History and Geography are subjects to teach in English (CLIL project).
The Chronicles of Narnia (2005) – a trilogy which teach us about friendship, principles, family, loyalty, faith, and much more. Students can write about the parts of story they liked the most or maybe, in case of intermediate students, elaborate a composition of what they learned with the story.
Another ideas to use in class:
Taboo game – Cards with words related to some episode or character and people have to find out what the word is;
Complete the sentence – Give students parts of the plot to complete. The words can be verbs, adjectives or even names of characters;
Who said that? – Separate students into groups and give them the challenge to find out who said some phrases in the movie. The group with the major number of right answers wins;
CINEMA CARD GAME – This printable game is elaborated for 3 to 4 players and it can be used as a warm-up or to help students to improve speaking.
